Heart Eyes Review

This year, Valentine's Day has fallen on a Friday, which means it's a perfect idea to see a film on its release day, as a date idea, a night out with friends or as I prefer, on your own. Out of all the films released today, I don't think there is a more perfect film to see on this day than Heart Eyes - a gory slasher film set on Valentine's Day. Now hear me out!

The film follows all the tropes of a slasher film; it is not only camp and over the top but is properly scary and adheres to its 18 rating with lots of gore and blood. For someone who is single on Valentine's Day, it is a perfect watch as it distracts you from the day and seeing loved-up couples everywhere, and the plot is centred on murdering couples on Valentine's Day - so it makes you thankful as well!

It centres around the town of Seattle, which is on lockdown as due to a series of killing rampages caused by the heart eyes killer, it looks like Seattle is his next target. In the town, there is Ally, played by Olivia Holt, who is recently single and stalking her ex's socials where he is flaunting his new relationship. However, she then meets Jay, played by Mason Gooding, in a meet-cute style at a coffee shop where they connect over their detailed coffee order. Ally works in marketing and has pitched an advert based on the tragic love story Romeo and Juliet, which ends in death and with the heart eyes killer targeting couples and brutally murdering them - the advert is under scrutiny online for being too close to home. So, who is brought in to help the company and, therefore, have the potential to replace Ally's job - but Jay! The enemies-to-lovers trope is strong with this one, and they capture the attention of the heart eyes killer and therefore have to escape its clutches before it's too late.

The film delivers in every aspect; it's not only properly scary with jump scares galore, but at its short run time of only 90 minutes, it is fast-paced fun with comedy sprinkled throughout. This is mainly due to the two leads, who have great chemistry and as an audience member, you are truly rooting for them to escape this serial killer. Gooding is no stranger to this genre, with his memorable work in the Scream franchise, another iconic slasher film which has comedic elements, which he brings in full force to this film.

Overall, this film joins a great company of campy slasher films, and as I said, it is the perfect film to see on Valentine's day as it caters to every audience - people in couples, as it is a scary film and is good to see with someone if you are easily scared but then is perfect for the single movie - goer as makes you grateful that you are not in a couple and to be targeted by the heart eyes killer!
