M3GAN 2.0 Review

The horror genre is birthing more original concepts than any other in the industry, and is also becoming one of the most sought-after genres for people worldwide to get involved in.

However, there are a few iconic characters in horror that audiences love to see on screen in sequels and prequels, and in a short period, M3GAN became a cultural phenomenon. The AI killer, dancing doll, captured the hearts of cinema-goers, and it wasn't long after the first film was released that a sequel was green-lit, and audiences were delighted about seeing M3GAN on screen again - but did she deliver again?

When the trailer for M3GAN 2.0 was released, fans were shocked by the change of genre from campy horror to badass action film, similar in the vein to Terminator 2 with its change in the main character. This was the only alteration, as the main cast returns with Alison Williams as Gemma, the brains behind the killer doll, and Violet McGraw as Cady, her niece, who has an unbreakable bond with M3GAN.

As stated above, the genre is very different to the first, and the plot is more layered, with M3GAN not being the main villain of the story. There is now AMELIA, who has been created using M3GAN's blueprint but is using her powers for evil, and is being used as a weapons-grade U.S. military experiment. To stop her, there is only one person who can, which is M3GAN, and she is brought back, much to Gemma's dismay and action and some comedy ensues.

Even though the second film has more on-screen action, in terms of big-budget action scenes, overall, it is not as fun as the first film. The magic of that film is hard to capture, and what M3GAN did for the audience seems to be lacking, with there being few creative death scenes and shocking sayings from her. However, when she does speak, it makes the scene and revokes that campy horror genre from the first film, which is how we all fell in love with this character.

Like the ending of the first film, it has left the audience's imagination as to whether M3GAN will return. However, unlike the first, where a sequel was announced straight after it was released in cinemas, it has yet to be announced whether there will be a continuation of M3GAN's story. Although with this latest film, it seems the magic of the first has gone and has been replaced with a brand new genre, M3GAN has become an iconic character of the horror genre, so seeing her on screen doing anything will draw in an audience of devoted fans.
